Having options is always a good thing, especially when it can save you from a costly mistake. In this quick tutorial, Jay P. Morgan from The Slanted Lens shows us why it is important to shoot background plates. This is to give yourself options in post production and help speed up your workflow.

What is a photographic plate you may ask?

Well, it’s just an extra frame that you shoot without your subject to give yourself some extra background options. Background plates are help to composite in post production. Granted, you may not have the chance to shoot a background plate in every situation, but it’s a great habit to get into.

This video explains few different background options, in focus, slightly out of focus, and even extremely out of focus. By shooting multiple plates, you can not only remedy a mistake you may have made on set, but you can also give your client multiple options. (if you choose to do so).

I can sit here all day explaining why I think background plates are important, but why take it from me? Check out the video and let Jay P. explain in detail the why it is importance to shoot background plates.
